Visiting Artist Workshops

Ceramic Tile Mosaics
with Doreen Mastandrea

Two-Day Hands on Mosaic Workshop at The Clay School
Saturday, October 24: 10am-5pm
Sunday, October 25: 10am-2pm

$185 for current members of The Clay School
$210 for non-members

This workshop is designed for everyone! Experience in clay is not required.

Whether you’re looking for a way to use all of your “smash day” pottery shards in a creative and purposeful way or simply interested in the art of tessellation, this is the workshop for you!

Visiting artist Doreen Mastandrea will introduce us to the wide world of ceramic mosaics. From the basics of tile cutting, color, and design planning to the nuances of layout, adhering, and grouting, Doreen will demonstrate all the steps of making your first ceramic mosaics. Design your own (highly encouraged!), or use one of the templates provided. You’ll learn a brand new medium and end the workshop with a completely finished piece.

This workshop will include access to colorful cuttable ceramic tiles made specifically for mosaics, but students are also encouraged to bring their own broken pottery shards to incorporate into their designs. The flatter the better. Curved shards will be more difficult to use and may be best saved for at-home experimentation once you’ve learned the basics.

This workshop will include demos, potluck lunch, and ample time for students to design and create a ceramic mosaic mirror, planter, tray, or garden paver. A list of suggested options ranging in price from $3-$30 will be emailed to participants in the weeks prior to the workshop so that students may purchase their own preferred substrate to bring to the class.
