New Students: Any remaining open spots in all classes will go live in the shop below at a certain time on registration day. Spots fill fast, so be online early for the best chance of getting in!
Waitlist: If the class you want is labeled as “Sold Out” click on it anyway and enter your email in the box labeled “Get notified by email when this product is in stock” to receive an email if a space opens up in your preferred class.
Beginners: If you are brand new to clay or have very limited experience (such as one class in high school) please sign up only for the classes that say “Beginners Welcome.”

Levels are listed in each class below. Use this guide to be sure you’re registering for a class that is the correct fit for you.
Total Beginners: You’re a newbie! You have never worked in clay before. Or maybe you have taken a one-night workshop or a clay class ages ago. You know you need all the info from the ground up.
Beginner: You’re getting it! You are still learning to wedge, center, and pull up walls. You can do it with help but not yet independently. You’ve taken at least one class already in a timeframe recent enough that you remember the skills you learned.
Pre-Intermediate: You’re hooked on clay! You’re starting to get the hang of centering and are gaining independence on the wheel. You’re comfortable enough to practice independently, even if you still can't quite make the clay do what you want all the time.
Intermediate: You’re to make gifts! You can wedge, center, and pull up walls to create many shapes. You’re still learning how to make lighter work and trim better, and you might not know how to make all forms yet or glaze consistently. You’re still working on new surface techniques.
Advanced: You’re ready to sell! You have honed your skills and started to create a body of work that suits you. You’re able to watch any demo and go off and do it more or less independently. You’ve already learned most of the surface techniques possible.

Wheel Throwing & Handbuilding Class

8 Week Wheel and Handbuilding Description

Our most popular class type teaches you a little bit of everything.

You will start by learning some handbuilding techniques that include working with slabs of clay, textures, and coils to explore clay’s properties and limitations.

Then you will move to learning on the pottery wheel how to throw bowls, vases, mugs and many other forms.

You will learn how to trim your work on the pottery wheel and finish pieces so they are ready for the firings and later glazing.

Teachers at The Clay School are highly skilled with years of teaching experience. They will teach the beginners the basics of working with clay as well as push returning students to the next level no matter how advanced of a maker you are.

Each teacher will create a new syllabus of projects each session to build on your skills and introduce new material so you will always be challenged and engaged.

Class Levels & Differences

We understand it is hard to tell what the differences are between the classes by just looking at the list above.

There are two things that make the classes different from each other. The first is the level of skill that is being taught. The second is the teacher teaching the class.

Make sure if you are a total beginner that you are signing up for a class designed to start from the beginning.

All our teachers here are wonderful and each have their own skills, style, and way of teaching. This one you will just need to trust us on if this is your first session at the studio. You are in good hands. We encourage you to try all the teachers over time because they all have so many tricks and tips to offer even to the most advanced artist.

8 week Handbuilding Class Description

Handbuilidng in clay is one of the many ways of working in clay that does not involve the pottery wheel which is a hard skill to master. This way of working is a lot easier to jump right into and was so popular we created a class just for hand builders. Often loved because it allows the creators to work outside the “round”.

This class will give you weeks of creating hand built projects demonstrated by your teacher in a way that will allow you to be as creative and unique as you want.

All pottery at The Clay School is food, dishwasher, and microwave safe no matter how you make it. Although sometime you will create fragile work and hand washing is always recommended.

All Classes welcomes anyone ages high school and up. All of our classes are mixed ages but have specific levels they cater to. Please check your class’s level before registering.
